GoWell was formally launched in February 2005 and is a longitudinal research and learning programme planned to last for around ten years.

Some components such as the community health and wellbeing survey took place in waves during the study (in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015), while other components of the programme such as the ecological monitoring and the qualitative research are ongoing. Other components develop over the course of the programme.

These results are used to help housing and health experts plan future neighbourhood renewal and community regeneration initiatives by analysing what has worked and what has not. The results also help communities to understand the impacts of changes in their area, and to influence future plans.
