GoWell was formally launched in February 2005 and is a longitudinal research and learning programme planned to last for around ten years.

Some components such as the community health and wellbeing survey took place in waves during the study (in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015), while other components of the programme such as the ecological monitoring and the qualitative research took place alongside. Other components developed over the course of the programme.

These results were used to help housing and health experts plan future neighbourhood renewal and community regeneration initiatives by analysing what worked and what did not. The results also helped communities to understand the impacts of changes in their area, and to influence future plans.
