We chose our study areas based on the type of regeneration and changes they would experience so that we could study different types of regeneration or neighbourhood renewal activity.  We have five types of study area which are outlined below along with the areas that fall within them.

Transformational Regeneration Areas

Also known as major regeneration areas, these are places where major investment is planned over the next 5-10 years, and where change will involve a large amount of demolition and rebuilding over a long period of time. Red Road, Sighthill and Shawbridge are our transformational regeneration study areas.

Local Regeneration Areas

Previously referred to as special project areas, these are places where a more limited amount and range of restructuring is planned, and on a much smaller scale than in the transformational regeneration areas. St Andrews Drive, Scotstoun and Gorbals Riverside are our local regeneration study areas.

Housing Improvement Areas

Also referred to as housing investment areas, these are places which are considered to be popular and functioning successfully, but where significant improvements are required to the housing, both internally and externally. Carntyne, Riddrie, Townhead and Govan are our original four housing improvement study areas.  We have just included an additional area within this category which is the Birness Drive multi-storey flats on the southside of Glasgow.

Peripheral Estates

These are large-scale housing estates on the city boundary where incremental changes are taking place, particularly in terms of housing. Castlemilk and Drumchapel are our peripheral estates.

Wider Surrounding Areas

These are neighbourhoods immediately surrounding MSFs that are undergoing significant regeneration and so which may be affected by the process and associated environmental and population change.  The neighbourhoods surrounding the MSFs in Scotstoun and Red Road are our study areas in this category.
